The National Sports Festival, Eko 2012 opened today, complete with rubbish twitter account.

The 18th National Sports Festival tagged ‘Eko 2012’ opened today at the Teslim Balogun Stadium, Surulere, Lagos. Organisers say inspiration for the opening ceremony was drawn from the London 2012 opening ceremony. The ceremony featured fireworks, Eyo masquerades, contemporary dancers, royal dancers and callisthenics displays celebrating the rich culture and history of Lagos.

The 2 week games boast of 32 sports and the participation of over 10,000 athletes representing the 36 states of the Federation. Unless there’s a sack race involved I’m not impressed.

The organisers have set up a website providing information on the games. Social media has also been used to fan up some interest. Only, the organizers need to have a word with whoever is in charge of the Eko 2012 twitter account. Instead of a twitter feed filled with information on the games and the athletes (using the London 2012 twitter feed as a parallel example), Eko 2012’s twitter gives us inane, inspirational quotes such as “How can I know what I can achieve if I quit? –  Jason Bishop” and “Obsession is just a word the lazy use to describe the dedicated – Unknown.”

If you want more information on Eko 2012 don’t bother checking the official twitter account. Unless you’re looking for some inane inspirational quotes.
